pignan-chateauneuf-du-pape-reserve-2012-750ml
Pignan Chateauneuf-du-Pape reserve 2012 750ml

Finesse, the house that imports Rayas into Japan, puts it plainly: Pignan is the estate's northernmost parcel, and its soil is not the sand that made Rayas famous.

Château Rayas sits about ten minutes by car from the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, at the end of a farm track, with roughly ten hectares of vines in a clearing in the woods. The estate's own website describes the ground as very sandy and poor and credits it for the finesse of the wines; the appellation's famous rounded pebbles are absent. Finesse adds that the surrounding forest widens the swing between day and night, the grapes ripen slowly, and harvest runs about three weeks behind the neighbours. Only Grenache is planted for red. Pignan is the exception to the sand: according to Finesse it is the most northerly of the estate's Châteauneuf-du-Pape parcels, on clay and rounded stones, closer to the appellation's usual soil. The producer lists it as Grenache, 100 percent.

The Reynaud family has grown vines here since 1880. Louis Reynaud began bottling under the château name in 1920, bought the Domaine des Tours at Sarrians in 1935–38 and Château de Fonsalette north of Orange in 1945. Jacques Reynaud ran Rayas and Fonsalette from 1978, and when he died suddenly in 1997 his nephew Emmanuel, who had built the cellar at Des Tours in 1989, took over all three estates; Finesse puts the family's holdings at about 60 hectares today. For 2012, Jeb Dunnuck (Wine Advocate, December 2015) reports that Pignan was raised entirely in stainless steel tanks and places it with the crème de la crème of the vintage. The label reads Pignan, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Réserve 2012, bottled at the property, 15 percent alcohol.

In the glass

Finesse describes Pignan as sweet and spicy on the nose, fresh in acidity and fruit, firm in structure, hard at first, then deep and long. Jeb Dunnuck (Wine Advocate, December 2015, 95, as quoted by Vinfolio) found wild strawberry, licorice, violets and wild flowers, full body and sweet tannin. Returning to it in November 2025 (94, as quoted by Vinfolio) he found kirsch, orange zest, garrigue and rose petals, and rated it as good as the Rayas Châteauneuf itself, if not better. Antonio Galloni (Vinous, April 2015, 91, as quoted by Vinfolio) noted blackberry, cherry compote, potpourri and emerging smokiness.

When to open

Jeb Dunnuck's November 2025 window is 2025–2035; in 2015 he suggested ten to twelve years from release. Given Finesse's note of a hard first impression, a decant of an hour or so is our suggestion, not the estate's.

At the table

Our suggestion: roast lamb with thyme, or guinea fowl with olives, to meet the spice and firm structure Finesse describes.

Quick facts

Producer

Château Rayas (Emmanuel Reynaud), Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Appellation

Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC

Region

Southern Rhône, France

Grape

Grenache (100%)

Vintage

2012

Volume

750 ml

Alcohol

15% vol (label)

Élevage

Stainless steel tanks (Wine Advocate, Dec 2015)

Provenance

Sourced from the Japanese importer.

Sources: Château Rayas (producer website and label); Finesse (Japanese importer); Wine Advocate (J.
