🍷 Master of Wine’s Selection Notes

"A Masterclass in Transparency: The Soul of Koji Nakada."

For the serious collector, Lou Dumont (founded by Koji Nakada) represents a unique intersection where Japanese precision meets Burgundian chaos. This "Tenchi-jin" (Heaven, Earth, Man) collection is exceptional because it includes the "unicorn" bottle—the Gevrey "Nature"— alongside the muscular Corton Grand Cru.

This is not just a set of wines; it is a study in terroir and philosophy. You are securing a journey from the purest expression of fruit to the deepest structural power of the Côte d'Or.

Here is my technical analysis of each bottle:

1. 【The Unicorn】 Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée Nature"

  • Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir

  • The MW Verdict: This is the crown jewel of the set. Sourced from the Lieu-dits "Haut Corvée" and "La Justice," this wine is crafted with zero sulfur, natural yeast, and organic farming.

  • Tasting Note: Without the "makeup" of sulfur or heavy extraction, this wine vibrates with energy. Expect an explosion of crushed wild strawberries, rose petals, and a raw, visceral minerality. It is incredibly pure, silky, and alive. A rare experience that few get to taste.

2. 【The Power Vintage】 Gevrey-Chambertin "La Brunelle" (2018)

  • Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir

  • Vintage Context: 2018 was a solar, warm vintage, producing wines of immense concentration.

  • The MW Verdict: La Brunelle is a serious plot located just below the Grand Crus. Combined with the heat of 2018, this is a "Power Pinot."

  • Tasting Note: Dense and brooding. It opens with dark cherry, worn leather, and the classic Gevrey "gamey" meatiness. The tannins are ripe but firm, providing a structure that guarantees this wine will age beautifully for another 15+ years. Decant for 1 hour if drinking now.

3. 【The King】 Corton Grand Cru

  • Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir

  • The MW Verdict: The only Grand Cru Red in the Côte de Beaune, Corton is famous for its muscle. Nakada-san respects this power but polishes the edges.

  • Tasting Note: A heavyweight. Notes of black forest fruit, truffle, and wet earth dominate. It has a broad, expansive mouthfeel with a finish that lingers for minutes. This is a gastronomic wine—perfect for wagyu beef or game dishes.

4. 【The Rare Premier Cru】 Meursault 1er Cru "Les Plures"

  • Varietal: 100% Chardonnay

  • The MW Verdict: "Les Plures" is a fascinating, often overlooked 1er Cru neighboring Santenots. It is rare to find this bottled separately.

  • Tasting Note: Classic Meursault opulence. It delivers a rich texture of hazelnut butter, ripe yellow pear, and acacia honey. However, unlike heavier Meursaults, it retains a spine of limestone acidity that keeps it fresh. A luxurious white wine experience.

5. 【The Hidden Gem】 Marsannay Blanc

  • Varietal: 100% Chardonnay

  • The MW Verdict: Marsannay is currently the smartest value play in the Côte de Nuits.

  • Tasting Note: While the Meursault is about richness, this Marsannay is about tension. It is saline, citrus-driven, and crisp, with notes of white flowers and lemon zest. It mimics the precision of a Chablis but with more body.

6. 【The House Signature】 Bourgogne Rouge

  • Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir

  • The MW Verdict: The benchmark for any producer is their regional wine. Lou Dumont excels here.

  • Tasting Note: Friendly, approachable, and charming. It offers bright red berries and a touch of spice. This is your "Tuesday Night Luxury"—a wine that doesn't require thinking, just enjoying.
