Nikka Whisky is a renowned producer of Japanese whisky, with a rich history that dates back to 1934 when it was founded by Masataka Taketsuru in Yoichi, Hokkaido, Japan. Taketsuru is often referred to as the "Father of Japanese Whisky" due to his pivotal role in establishing the whisky industry in Japan. His journey began in 1918 when he went to Scotland to learn the art of whisky making, including studying organic chemistry and gaining hands-on experience at Scotch whisky distilleries. Upon returning to Japan, he married Jessie Roberta "Rita" Cowan and eventually founded Nikka Whisky​

Nikka operates two primary distilleries in Japan: the Yoichi Distillery in Hokkaido, established in 1934, and the Miyagikyo Distillery in Aoba-ku, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, established in 1969. Each distillery produces whisky with distinct characteristics. The company also owns the Ben Nevis Distillery in Scotland, acquired in 1989​
