🍷 Master of Wine’s Selection Notes

"A Tale of Two Terroirs: The Rise of Marsannay."

Marsannay is often called the "Golden Gate" to the Côte de Nuits. While historically underrated, it is currently producing wines of Premier Cru quality. Koji Nakada (Lou Dumont) is a master of this village.

This set is a fascinating comparative tasting class. You have the opportunity to compare two distinct Lieux-dits (single vineyards): "En Leautier" and "En Combereau." Additionally, the inclusion of the extremely high-value "En Leautier" suggests a bottle of significant age or rarity, making this a collector's centerpiece.

Here is my technical analysis of the lineup:

1. 【The Collector’s Piece】 Marsannay "En Leautier"

  • Grape: Pinot Noir

  • The Terroir: Located near the Fixin border, "En Leautier" has heavy clay soils rich in iron. It is widely considered a candidate for future Premier Cru status.

  • The MW Verdict: This is the heavyweight of the set. Given its high valuation, this bottle represents the pinnacle of the estate's library. "En Leautier" is known for structure, power, and tannins that demand time. Expect deep complexity, notes of dark plum, earth, and a savory, meaty character unique to this plot. A serious wine.

2. 【The Elegant Challenger】 Marsannay "En Combereau"

  • Grape: Pinot Noir

  • The Terroir: In contrast to Leautier, "Combereau" sits on a slope with more limestone influence.

  • The MW Verdict: If Leautier is the "muscle," Combereau is the "ballet dancer." This wine showcases the finesse of Lou Dumont. It is typically aromatic, driven by red cherries, raspberries, and a distinct floral lift. The texture is silkier and more accessible. Drinking these two side-by-side is a perfect education in soil types.

3. 【The Hidden Gem】 Côte de Nuits-Villages

  • Grape: Pinot Noir

  • The MW Verdict: Often sourced from plots in Brochon (neighboring Gevrey-Chambertin), Lou Dumont’s Côte de Nuits-Villages often drinks like a "Baby Gevrey." It offers more weight and spice than a standard regional wine, with firm tannins and a dark fruit profile.

4. 【The "Insider's" Daily Drinker】 Lou Dumont - Bourgogne Pinot Noir V.V. 2022

Vintage: 2022 Grape: 100% Pinot Noir Classification: Regional (Vieilles Vignes / Old Vines) Winemaker: Koji Nakada (Tenchi-jin)

🍷 Master of Wine’s Tasting Note

"Don't let the 'Regional' label fool you. This wine drinks like a Village-level Burgundy."

In the world of Burgundy, the producer is everything. Koji Nakada, the man behind Lou Dumont, is famous for his perfectionism. For his entry-level Bourgogne Rouge, he refuses to compromise. He uses "Vieilles Vignes" (Old Vines)—grapevines that are typically over 30 years old.

Why does this matter? Old vines produce fewer grapes, but those grapes are smaller and more concentrated. This gives the wine a depth and complexity rarely found at this price point.

The 2022 Vintage Advantage: 2022 was a "Solar Vintage"—warm and generous. This means the fruit is perfectly ripe, luscious, and ready to drink immediately. It is a happy, vibrant year for Pinot Noir.

5&6  【The Double Staple】 Bourgogne Blanc (2*Bottles)

  • Grape: Chardonnay

  • The MW Verdict: You receive two bottles of this versatile white. Nakada-san’s whites are underrated—they are fresh but possess a lovely texture due to careful lees aging. Expect notes of white peach, citrus zest, and a touch of toasted almond. Perfect for daily dining or starting the evening.
