The Deepest Roots of Barolo. A "Vecchie Viti" Masterpiece. In the hierarchy of Luca Roagna's wines, the "Vecchie Viti" (Old Vines) label represents the absolute zenith. Sourced exclusively from the oldest parcels within the historic Pira vineyard—many planted as far back as 1937—this wine is a profound expression of time and terroir.

The Distinction: Vecchie Viti Do not confuse this with the standard Pira bottling. Roagna strictly separates vines by age. Only vines older than 50 years make it into this cuvée. These ancient root systems deliver a wine of unmatched mineral depth, complexity, and longevity.

The Terroir: Pira (Castiglione Falletto) Roagna is the guardian of this legendary cru in Castiglione Falletto. The unique soil composition here (a mix of limestone and sand) yields a Barolo that marries the structural power of Serralunga with the floral elegance of Barolo.

The Vintage: 2019 A classic, structured vintage that critics are calling one of the best in recent history. The 2019 Pira Vecchie Viti is built for the ages—austere in its youth but packed with energy and density.

Limited Production This is a rare artisan production. As stated on the label, only 3,588 bottles were produced for the entire world.

Tasting Profile

  • The Nose: A hauntingly complex bouquet of wild cherry, dried rose petals, menthol, iron/rust, and truffle.

  • The Palate: Intense and vertical. The "Old Vine" concentration is evident in the mid-palate density. The tannins are firm yet noble, framing a finish that resonates with saline minerality.

  • The Verdict: An intellectual wine for the patient collector.

Why It’s a Unicorn
