Shipping & Delivery

Bottles Japan — effective 25 September 2026. Part of our Terms of Sale.

1. Where and how we ship

  • Japan: Yamato Transport refrigerated ("Cool") delivery. Free on orders of ¥25,000 or more; otherwise the rate shown at checkout. A recipient aged 20 or over must sign for the parcel; the carrier may ask for ID.
  • International: Japan Post EMS, FedEx or DHL, at the rate shown at checkout or quoted by email. International shipments are not temperature-controlled unless a cold-chain option is offered and selected. We ship only to destinations listed at checkout; if your country is not listed, email info@bottlesjapan.com before ordering.
  • Tokyo pickup: free collection at our Ebisu shop — see Storage & Pickup Terms.

2. Dispatch and delivery times

  • Orders are normally dispatched within 3–5 business days (Japan Standard Time).
  • Typical transit after dispatch: Japan 1–2 days; EMS 5–10 business days; FedEx/DHL 3–6 business days. Customs clearance, holidays, weather and carrier disruption can extend these; times are estimates, not guarantees.
  • You will receive a tracking number by email when the parcel leaves us. Allow 1–3 business days for tracking to update.

3. Duties, taxes and import rules — your responsibility

  • International orders are shipped DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid). Import duty, excise, VAT/sales tax, customs brokerage and any inspection fees at the destination are payable by the recipient and are not included in our prices. Prices on the international store are shown excluding Japanese consumption tax (export).
  • Before ordering, you must confirm that you may lawfully receive alcohol by the chosen carrier at your address, including any personal import limits, licence requirements and age rules. Regulations vary by country, state and even carrier, and change without notice.
  • If a parcel is held, seized, destroyed or returned by customs or the postal service, the consequences are set out in our Returns, Cancellations & Refunds Policy (section 6): seized or destroyed parcels are not refunded; returned parcels are refunded net of costs.

4. United States — please read

  • We ship to the US by EMS to destinations in the East and Central US (for example New York, Chicago, Texas, Florida), where our customers routinely receive wine without issue.
  • We do not ship by EMS to California or other West Coast destinations: the postal service there destroys alcohol shipments on arrival, and such parcels are not refundable.
  • FedEx can deliver anywhere in the US, but only where you or a friend hold an alcohol import licence that can be used for the shipment. Email us before ordering if you need this route.
  • Having a friend in New York, Chicago, Houston or a similar city receive the parcel on your behalf is often the safest option.

5. Address accuracy and delivery attempts

  • You are responsible for entering a complete and correct delivery address, phone number and, where required, tax ID. Email us immediately if you notice an error; we can usually correct it before dispatch but not after.
  • Parcels that cannot be delivered because of an incorrect address, an absent recipient after the carrier's attempts, or a failure to respond to customs within their deadline will be returned to us and treated under section 6 of the Returns Policy. Re-shipping is at your cost.
  • A parcel recorded as delivered to the address given is considered delivered.

6. Packaging, breakage and loss

  • Every bottle is packed in a moulded wine shipper inside a corrugated carton. Inspect the parcel on receipt and report any damage within 48 hours with photographs, as set out in the Returns Policy, section 3A.
  • Within Japan, damage in transit is handled by us through Yamato and replaced or refunded.
  • International shipments travel at your risk from the moment we hand them to the carrier. If damage occurs, have the carrier record it at delivery, keep all packaging and contact us within 48 hours; we will lodge the carrier claim for you and pass on any compensation the carrier pays. Transit insurance can be added at your cost on request before dispatch.
  • All parcels are tracked. A parcel the carrier confirms as lost is replaced or refunded; a parcel recorded as delivered is considered delivered.

7. Summer and temperature

Wine is stored in our temperature-controlled cellar until dispatch. During hot months (June–September) international parcels may be exposed to heat in transit and at customs. You may ask us to hold your order in free storage (up to 90 days) and ship in cooler weather; if you ask us to ship during summer, transit heat exposure is at your risk unless a cold-chain service was purchased.

8. Partial shipments and consolidation

Where an order contains items with different availability we may ship in parts at no extra cost. If you would like to combine several orders into one shipment, email us before the first one is dispatched; we will hold and consolidate them.

9. Force majeure

We are not liable for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control, including carrier suspensions, customs actions, strikes, extreme weather, natural disasters, pandemics or government orders. Where fulfilment becomes impossible we will refund the affected items.
