The maker who changed the common knowledge about Mâcon: the wine of Guffens-Heynen. Guffens-Heynen is, in name and reality, the top domaine of Chardonnay. The proprietor, Jean-Marie Guffens, has made the world aware of Mâcon, previously known as a producer of "cheap wine", as a region that produces high-quality wine. Jean-Marie moved from Belgium to Burgundy in the 1980s. He studied winemaking at a Mâcon viticulture school, then bought a small domaine and started releasing his own wines. His unique, even 'artistic' flair, has quickly made him a known figure among wine enthusiasts.
The winemaking is done in as simple a way as possible, in line with his principle that "We don't need the heaviness of the fruit. What we need is the stripped-down beauty." He makes fine adjustments according to the condition of the grapes each year, and his particular attention to detail allows each wine's individuality to stand out, resulting in high-quality flavors.
He receives the highest ratings every year in French evaluation magazines, and his wines are even praised as surpassing Grand Cru in quality! He is also the only one to have received the three-star producer title from "Le Meilleur Vin de France" in the AOC Mâcon, comparable to DRC and Roulot, and has received a five-star rating from Robert Parker.
